As a physician trained in modern medicine, I have always been skeptical of alternative remedies. However, after thoroughly studying the health claims of several alternative remedies, I became impressed with the science that backed up some of those health claims. I started taking the supplements in my "Chronic Infection Pack" in the fall of 2006 in order to try and prevent the sickly winters I and my family have been having. The results were dramatic. Rather than the four or more sinus and bronchitis infections I have been dealing with every winter, I only had one illness. I have become a believer!

I believe that God designed our bodies with the capacity for self-healing, but we must provide the proper building blocks our body requires to repair damaged or cancerous cells and attack invading organisms. These supplements help provide some of those critical building blocks, and help us be good stewards of the health our Creator has given us.

However, wandering the maze of brands, health claims, and scientific studies that do exist can be very frustrating and cumbersome. Not all brands are trustworthy in my judgment, especially brands made overseas and sold at department stores.

After much study I have become convinced that there are many well-studied alternative remedies that may supplement or even compete with contemporary medicine in several arenas.

Health Maintenance

I am convinced that every patient would benefit considerably from two supplements for health mainten-ance: a Mannatech Multivitamin and Colloidal Minerals. These are sold together as a Health Maintenance Pack. I also include these two products in each of the four supplement packs which I have designed for each particular disease entity.

A multi-vitamin is important for optimal health maintenance, but not all multi-vitamins are created equal. Sure, China-made vitamins sold at Wal-Mart may be cheaper, but should you trust your well-being to vitamins manufactured by slave labor in communist countries? Mannatech is an extraordinary multi-vitamin that includes a unique glyconutrient supplement that remarkably improves cell-to-cell communication and immune system function. This company has some of the best science of any supplement suggesting positive effects on several different diseases. Their glyconutrients are included in these unique multivitamins.

Colloidal minerals are liquefied minerals. I am convinced that the food we eat is not as nutritious as it was in previous generations. Plants derive nutrients from the soil and the soil has become depleted from decades of over-farming and over-simplified fertilizing. Modern fertilizer is a mix of chemicals, and devoid of essential minerals necessary for optimal health.

Organic colloidal minerals are produced when layers of compressed prehistoric vegetation is leeched of its mineral content, producing a rich mineral liquid that is easily absorbed by the body. These colloidal minerals supplement an ordinary diet extremely well to provide the 90 nutrients essential to optimal health.

Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease kills over a half of Americans. Strokes, heart attacks, and peripheral arterial disease are types of cardiovascular disease that result from an arterial disease called atherosclerosis.

The supplements I have chosen for the Cardiovascular Disease Pack are the two supplements mentioned above for Health Maintenance, plus Zango, and Nature's Sunshine's Cardio Assurance supplement and Coenzyme Q10.

Zango is a tasty supplement that is made from the mangosteen fruit. It has a substance called xanthone which acts as an powerful anti-oxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is a significant factor in the rupture of atherosclerotic plaques, which causes strokes and heart attacks. Zango may be one of the best supplements to prevent the dreaded consequences of atherosclerosis.

The Cardio Assurance supplement is a blend of heart-protecting herbs, vitamins, and flavenoids, which support arterial health and circulation and is provided by a trustworthy American brand, Nature's Sunshine. Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful anti-oxidant that helps prevent or reverse the arterial damage of atherosclerosis. Several studies have concluded that statin drugs - and most patients with cardiovascular disease require statin drug therapy - may lower the body's Coenzyme Q10 levels, and supplementation may help prevent the side effects of statins and improve the disease of the body's arteries.

I am selling two natural cholesterol supplements separately because not all cardiovascular disease patients will require both supplements.

If you have low levels of "good cholesterol" (HDL), then you should take the Super-Omega-3 fish oil tablets. Super-Omega 3 is a source of two fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which reduce the risk of coronary artery disease. They raise the "good cholesterol" levels and lower the triglyceride levels. One tablet contains 1,000 mg of fish oil and a lemon extract to reduce the aftertaste of fish oil and to reduce gas.

If your primary cholesterol problem is an elevated "bad cholesterol" (LDL), and you wish to avoid a statin drug or cannot tolerate a statin drug, then the Red Yeast Rice supplement is for you. It lowers the LDL levels that contribute to atherosclerosis.

If you have both cholesterol problems - elevated "bad cholesterol" levels and low "good cholesterol" levels - then you should take both the Super Omega 3 and the Red Yeast Rice supplements.

Musculoskeletal Disease

Of all the diseases I treat, I am least impressed with what contemporary medicine has to offer to remedy musculoskeletal disease. Frequently, the therapies are not that effective and the side effects of the typical therapies for arthritis, degenerative joint disease, fibromyalgia, etc., can be life-threatening or addictive.

In addition to the two supplements mentioned above under Health Maintenance, I have added the following supplements to my Musculoskeletal Disease Pack: Zango, and Everflex and Triple Relief by Nature's Sunshine.

In addition to the benefits of Zango mentioned above, Zango acts as an effective natural "COX-2 inhibitor" which has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect.

Everflex is glucosamine and chondroitin with two anti-inflammatory herbs that lesser brands do not have. These promote joint lubrication, decrease muscle discomfort, and provide the basic building blocks the body needs to heal damaged cartilage and joints.

Triple Relief is a blend of herbs that have been traditionally used to soothe muscle pain.

I am selling Calcium-Magnesium supplement separately because not all patients with musculoskeletal disease require this supplement. This product contains an important combination of minerals for bone and muscle health. Every female patient who is going through or has gone through menopause should be on this supplement, as well as any patient who does not take in adequate amounts of dairy products or who suffers from thinning of the bone (osteopenia or osteoporosis). Magnesium has also been shown to reduce leg cramps and muscle pain.

Bowel Disease

Bowel disease includes irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation or diarrhea, esophageal reflux, gastritis, chronic diverticulitis, ulcers, etc. These are products that I believe can benefit most bowel conditions.

In addition to the two products described above under Health Maintenance, I include the following Nature's Sunshine products in my Bowel Disease Pack: Nature's Three Fiber supplement, Probiotic Eleven, and Digestive Enzymes.

Nature's Three includes fiber from psyllium, oat, and apple, and fiber has proven to improve a host of bowel conditions, including cancer. Since the fiber is taken from three sources and not just one, it is much more effective and tolerable than other brands.

Probiotic Eleven provides a unique combination of healthful natural microorganisms such as acidophilus that maintain and replenish the intestinal flora, support digestion, promote immunity, and aid in the elimination of toxins. This supplement is also sold separately for the benefit of those who suffer from fungal infections, or for the prophylactic use of those who get fungal infections when they take antibiotics.

The Digestive Enzymes supplement provides a blend of enzymes to help digest proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. It helps relieve indigestion, chronic constipation, and diarrhea.

Chronic Infections

Infections are one of the most common complaints I hear every day from patients.

In addition to the two supplements mentioned above for Health Maintenance, I also include the following Nature's Sunshine supplements in my Chronic Infection Pack: Colloidal Silver, Echinacea with Goldenseal, and Immune Stimulator.

Colloidal Silver is a safe liquified silver supplement that provides powerful support to the immune system. Echinacea and Goldenseal are two immune-supporting herbs that help fight infections. (Pregnant or lactating women should not consume Goldenseal, but can take Echinacea alone.)
