Law & Politics
*In 1776, 11 of the 13 colonies required that one had to be a Christian to be eligible to run for political office.
*In 1777, the Continental Congress voted to spend $300,000 to purchase Bibles for distribution in the nation.
*Our DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE declares, "...the laws of nature and of nature's God... We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights... appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions..."
by Patrick Johnston
Oh, America, America, God shed His grace on thee. But you have tread his grace underfoot And abused your liberty.
Freedom to ease, to lust and lie, This is the freedom you crave. More, give me more! is your unfailing whine From the cradle to the Medicare grave.
Oh, America, America, 'Twas home of the free and the brave. The Federal breast has converted you - Home of the bound, land of the slave.
The tireless Federal assault against Christianity continues: a Federal judge capitulated to the ACLU and declared monuments of the Ten Commandments at Adams County high schools to be unconstitutional. Threatened with arrest, hundreds of citizens obstructed the monuments from destruction by Federal mercenaries Monday, June 9. However, the Ten Commandments were uprooted by sundown. Truly, "they have done violence to Thy law" (Zephaniah 3:4).
Not if, when. We will be attacked again. The combination of porous borders, flourishing illegal immigration, and pre-emptively attacking sovereign nations to uphold U.N. resolutions contrary to the U.N.'s wishes is a recipe for more terrorists attacks. When we are attacked again, my greatest fear is not what our attackers will do to us, whether they will wreck our economy, assassinate our leaders, wreak havoc on our infrastructure, or how many of us they will kill. My greatest fear will be our government's remedy for these attacks.
"Dr. Johnston," a colleague asked me yesterday, "aren't you going to fill out the application keep concealed weapons out of your office?" A physician wouldn't want guns in his office, right?
I walked into the hospital to see a patient yesterday, and I saw one of the placards: "No weapons of any kind are allowed inside this building." We have seen the signs outside of our public schools for years, forbidding even teachers from carrying concealed weapons onto the property.
There is a false dichotomy in American politics and in the media today. The spectrum of political ideas has been divided into two categories - left and right, liberal and conservative, Democrat and Republican. Unfortunately, the line in the sand does not accurately reflect where the true conflict lies. The line in the sand has been drawn in the public arena so that the enemies of the preborn, the opponents to the free market, the traitors to the Constitution, the proponents of the sovereignty-threatening United Nations, the lobbyists for an ever-increasing Federal police state, the advocates for homosexual marriage, and the haters of the Christian God can comfortably stand on either side.
A local newspaper ran an article recently informing the public of the early retirement of a renowned family practice physician in small-town Ohio. He is a casualty - as are the seven thousand patients who will miss him - of Ohio's medical malpractice crisis. This physician was thrice sued in the recent past for malpractice. Two of the cases were so blatantly frivolous that they were thrown out before trial, but his insurance company had to pay attorneys' fees nonetheless. In the third case, a widow sued because her husband died of a heart attack - in part due to his noncompliance with this physician's careful instructions. Though the doctor was not at fault, it was less expensive for him to settle out of court than to fight a case that he would probably win. If he chose to go to trial, there was the risk that the jury would be emotionally manipulated by the poor widow's sob story and would rule against him. The doctor took the prescription of his attorney and settled out of court, and as a result his malpractice insurance carrier dropped him like a hot potato! Unreasonably high jury awards are forcing insurance companies to double their rates and stop insuring their "high risk" physicians. Other insurance companies were quoting him astronomical rates that would have bankrupted him.
She was blond, beautiful, eighteen years of age, fresh out of high school, and ready to conquer the world. She wouldn't let an unexpected pregnancy interfere with her plans. The Planned Parenthood clinic in Hayward, California, had just the thing for what ailed her: RU486, also known as mifepristone. One 600 mg pill, followed by a dose of vaginal misoprostol at home to expel the little dead nuisance, and, presto, Holly Patterson's little problem would be eliminated!
This week, Judge Roy Moore's monument of the Ten Commandments has finally been uprooted. The ACLU's victory in their assault against Christianity was solidified with his suspension as Chief Justice. As stirring as the drama has become, this battle is largely symbolism over substance. Assume the U.S. Supreme Court agrees with Moore's case, democracy is restored in Alabama, Moore gets his job back, and the Ten Commandments are allowed back into the Court rotunda. Will Alabama still violate them? That is the primary issue for God. It is not enough that monuments to God's law be erected in our halls of governance and restored to the halls of our public schools - they must be in our hearts.
The Right Remedy for Murder: Death
"Murderer Suspect Held On One Million Dollar Bond" read the front page article of the Zanesville newspaper. Does this concept bother anybody else besides me? Why can a rich murderer go free while poor murderers are locked away? Should justice respect the wealth of the O.J. Simpson's in this country?
God demands that murderers be executed. "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed, for in the image of God made He man." (Gen.9:6) "He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall surely be put to death." (Exod.21:12). Jesus endorsed it in Matthew 15 and Paul in Romans 13.
